Shoo Fly Screen Tutorial

Colleen of Needles-n-Pins posted this fun Primitive tutorial on her blog and how appropriate for fly and mosquito season!!

The shoo fly screen started in Colonial times when women used shoo fly screens to keep those pesky flies off their foods. Today, shoo fly screens are becoming increasingly popular and look good in the primitive/colonial decorated homes. Here is an easy way to make your own shoo fly screen:

1. Look for a strainer with the removable handle and wire. It will pop right off all in one piece. It is okay if the strainer is dented or rusty. It will add to its character.

2. Purchase a wooden knob at a craft store. Make sure you buy a knob that has a pre-drilled hole. It should also include a screw for attaching.

3. Paint the wood knob in a color of your choice. After the paint is dry, sand the edges to distress it and then apply a coat of dark walnut stain, wipe off and let dry.

4. Last, attach the wooden knob to the top of the strainer using a screwdriver.

Sounds pretty easy to me which is really nice…..the easier the better. J
